Clinic – 18/12/15

Standard

Hello and welcome back to the Friday blog… On a Friday?! Oh! It must be a special day!

Today I went to my diabetes clinic where I had discussions with my Diabetes Specialist Nurse, dietician and consultant. So… My glargine dosage has been upped to 12 units and after 3/4 days, I’m meant to up it again if it seems to be working. This is because when I wake up, my blood sugar doesn’t appear to have moved much or it’s sometimes even higher than it was when I went to bed. My HbA1C is 48 mmol/mol which is (1) Exactly where it’s meant to be and (2) the exact same as last time. I’ve also been told to start rotating injection sites and finger pricking sites more than I already do!

So, that’s about it but if you have any clinic stories, drop them down below in the comments or get in touch via the ‘Contact Me’ page.

Next week’s post is DELAYED until Monday the 28th of December because next Friday is Christmas Day!

See you next Monday!

Ta ra!

Clinic 18/09/15

Standard

Hello and welcome back! I went to clinic today! Let’s get right into it!

The first thing that happened at clinic was that they did my HBA1C. It came back as 48 mmol/mol which according to new guidelines is dead on! It is certainly better than 64! We also discussed my very late lunchtime and how we could avoid low blood sugar before lunch. My ratios have stayed where they are which means my insulin requirements haven’t changed much.

We also asked a few questions and looked into getting a health plan for my school because I’m the only person without one. Whoops.

I don’t really have much more to say because clinic isn’t that entertaining. Sorry that it was so short… Diabetes isn’t that interesting… 😀

Comment down below any clinic stories you have!

See you next week!

Sorry…

Standard

Hello and welcome back to (a slightly overdue) post here on the blog! I’m very sorry there was no post on Friday, but I am part of a youth theatre and we performed our show Friday and Saturday night. I didn’t get back until 10 O’clock, so there was no time for a post! Anyway, let’s get into the post!

Doing these shows has meant several rehearsals at weird times in the day. I’ve had to be there at 5pm which meant I had a lot of quick meals (beans on toast, sandwiches, etc.). My blood sugar hasn’t come out that bad though and is apparently starting to settle down a bit. I’m also starting volunteering on Tuesday with one of the younger youth theatres where I’ll be in charge of their sound and lights. I have to be there at 5pm though which means I’ll be having an oddly timed meal once a week. I’ll let you know how I get on with that… School is once again becoming one of those boring things, but I’ll have a lot of exam stress later on in the school year. I have diabetes clinic on Friday, so I’ll talk about in my next post.

Sorry that I wasn’t able to post on Friday, but the schedule should start retuning to normal from now on until I have another show or something else to do!

Comment down below if you have to have some meals at weird times and how you deal with it!

I’ll see you next week!

Clinic – 15/05/2015

Standard

Yep, it’s that time of the week again!

Today, I went off to clinic where I saw a nurse, a dietician and my consultant. With the diabetes nurse, I spoke about my Bell’s Palsy and my course of steroids and how they affected my blood sugar. I had my HbA1C done and it came back at 64 mmol/mol which (all things considering) isn’t too bad. The nurse felt that some of my high blood sugar might be because of my carbohydrate ratio. The dietician has told me to fill out a food diary for 5 days and she will come and review me in a couple of weeks. The consultant gave me a quick review, sen me for a blood test and sent me home. And that was that.

That’s pretty much it for this week but I’ll see you next week!

HbA1c

Standard

I realised that I have been using this term a lot lately. HbA1c. However, I’ve only briefly touched on what it actually is. HbA1c refers to ‘glycated haemoglobin’. It forms when haemoglobin (a protein in red blood cells) joins with glucose in the blood. The rough life time of these cells is 12 weeks. At clinic, they will either prick your finger or take blood from a vein in your arm. The collected blood is put into a special machine that will then return your HbA1c. Your HbA1c gives your diabetes team an average blood sugar. It gives them a good idea on how good your control is. When my HbA1c is done, I prick my finger and it is collected in a small, plastic vial. It is inserted into the machine and then takes five minutes before giving you your result. In non-diabetics, their HbA1c should sit between 20 – 41 mmol/mol. In diabetics, it is expected to sit between 48 mmol/mol and 58 mmol/mol. My HbA1c is 39 mmol/mol. This means I have great diabetes control. I hope I’ve managed to explain this term a bit more. I’ll see you all later! Ta ra!

Clinic – 19/12/14

Standard

Hello there! Welcome back! Today, I’m going to talk about my most recent clinic visit. I went to clinic last Friday. I had my HbA1C done and it came back as 39 mmol/mol. This is what a normal person’s HbA1C should be. In diabetics, they look for an HbA1C between 48 and 58 mmol/mol. This means that I have great diabetes control! Yay!

Unfortunately, I have to have another blood test 😦 . It’s to check that my gluten free diet is working. I also had to give a urine sample. My bladder decided that it didn’t want to work when it was needed and they never got their urine sample. It was to check my protein levels or something.

That was my most recent account of clinic. I apologise that there haven’t been many posts recently, but I didn’t have much to talk about. You may have noticed that my blog is snowing as well! This is a feature that runs up until early January. I will post around Christmas time. Thank you very much for reading this and I’ll see you later! Ta ra!

My 4th Clinic

Standard

I have been given a fourth clinic appointment! It also happens to coincide with the last day of term at my school which means I get to leave early. Yay! I will let you know when I’m going and I’ll also give you some updates on how I get on.

Clinic – 31/10/14

Standard

I have returned from clinic!

I spoke about my new diagnosis of coeliac disease as well as how it’s hard to find food that tastes good. I discussed my diabetes and how my blood sugar has been a bit high recently. I asked some questions that I wanted to ask and I had my HbA1c done. Last time it was 64. They aim for it to be between 48 and 58. My HbA1c was 41. My nurse told me that this means I have such good control of my diabetes, it’s almost as normal as a person that doesn’t have diabetes. I was quite happy with that. Finally, my consultant (name withheld for privacy reasons)  asked me about my poo habits. How awkward.

Check back over here at 11:30pm GMT for a Halloween post! On November the 1st, we’ll begin NaBloPoMo!

See you later tonight! (Depending on when you’re reading this).
